Manglephonica is a project that Kylan refers to as “dance collage.” The project is about juxtaposing different styles of underground electronic music like breakcore, vaporwave, mashcore, speedcore, etc. and referencing their aesthetics, timbre and sampling techniques. This creates a meta-textual layer to the music where it is always commenting on music outside of itself and forcing the audience to engage with their perceptions of genre, style and the ways we create cultural boundaries around these concepts.
The first release by Manglephonica. Intended to be listened to as a 28 minute piece of uninterrupted music, The Past Speaks Loudly To The Future engages with how media from our past is repurposed and re-contextualized for new communities and generations. Manglesplaining is the 2nd album by Manglephonica. The piece was created as a way of bringing the Manglephonica style into the domain of improvisation. All of the music was improvised using an instrument created in Max/MSP and serves as more of a traditional collage in the style of John Cage or John Oswald than the previous venture. Ego Is My Middle Name is the 3rd album by Manglephonica in which no outside samples are used. It was an exercise to see if the distinctive Manglephonica sound could be created using only original material. Because of this, the album has a larger focus on synthesizers and traditional beat making. Buy the album here: https://virtua94records.bandcamp.com/album/ego-is-my-middle-name
